On May 15th, Riga hosted a significant business forum orchestrated by the Latvian Ministry of Transport, aimed at fostering collaboration with Kazakhstan. ⠀ Among the attendees were notable figures such as Minister Marat Karabayev from the Ministry of Transport of Kazakhstan, alongside Latvian counterparts including Andris Ameriks and Uldis Reimanis. ⠀ Discussions revolved around pivotal issues like the development strategies for Latvian ports and railways, and analyzing cargo turnover trends at the Ports of Latvia over the past decade. ⠀ The Kazakh delegation showcased their projects, notably opportunities at the Port of Kuryk and advancements in railway transportation from China, underscoring the latest statistics on transported goods. ⠀ The Association of Carriers of Kazakhstan shared insights into the country’s robust road and railway network development, achieving a significant milestone of 1000 km per day and substantially reducing transportation time from China to around 6 days through Kazakhstan. Hence, it is now possible to deliver freight by railway from China to Riga within 12-14 days. ⠀ The forum also delved into the geopolitical shifts impacting the logistics sector, acknowledging a recent decline in cargo turnover at Latvian ports, which nonetheless opened up new business avenues by freeing up substantial port capacities and terminals. ⠀ Kazakh delegates outlined their strategic vision, focusing on transporting energy resources like coal and liquid fuel by rail from Kazakhstan to Latvian ports. Additionally, they discussed facilitating the transshipment of goods to Northern European countries. ⠀ Looking ahead, the ongoing dialogue promises further fruitful exchanges and the realization of shared endeavors in the dynamic realm of global trade and transportation.
